Know your card

The CSCS card, explained

Proof of training and qualifications for UK construction sites — colour-coded by skill level, from Green labourer through to Black manager.

What it is

A card that proves you belong on site

CSCS cards show that people working on construction sites have the right training and qualifications for the job they do. That raises standards and helps keep sites safer.

The most common starting point is the Green Labourer card. As you gain skills and qualifications, you can move up through Blue, Gold, and Black — often with better pay and responsibility.

01

Ranked by role

From labourers and trainees through supervisors and managers — every colour has its own ranking.

02

Test + training

Most routes need a CITB HS&E touchscreen test plus a matching qualification or course.

03

Built to progress

Start green, grow your trade evidence, then upgrade when you are ready for the next colour.

Why it matters

Why employers ask for a CSCS card

Many sites now treat the right CSCS card as mandatory. Holding the wrong colour for your role can block access — and slow your career growth.

Site entry

Principal contractors increasingly require a valid CSCS card before you step on site.

Role match

Your colour should match the job you do. Wrong card, wrong access — upgrade when needed.

Career path

Higher cards signal stronger skills and qualifications, which can support better wages.

Renewal

Keeping your CSCS card valid

Most CSCS cards have a limited validity and can be renewed — with a few exceptions. Stay ahead of expiry so site access is never interrupted.

To be eligible to renew, you typically need:

  • A CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed in the past 2 years.
  • Valid proof of qualification, or updated membership of a CSCS-recognised governing body.
